Create your own Martian colony

Terraformers is a premium strategy game where you create your colony and manage your resources, developed by Asteroid Lab. You get to explore the Red Planet and do a lot of activities, from developing cities to spreading life across Mars. It even has a riveting story, told through the story of its leaders that makes the game premise feel like it will happen anytime soon in real life.

With its complexity and scope, Terraformers easily competes with Dune: Spice Wars and Victoria 3. It surpasses its contemporaries in one factor: realism. Both its tech and environment feel scientifically grounded.

Lead mankind to the New Frontier

One impressive feature for Terraformers is its leader selection. While Civilization 6 features real, historical leaders, this game relies on fictional characters with timely and believable backstories. Their backgrounds provide insight into their gameplay strategies as AI opponents and their advantages should you choose to play under their banner. Each leader has a specialization and a set of skills that when used wisely can give your colony an advantage.

Another challenging aspect of this game is its various terraforming projects that extend previously thought-of ideas for propagating life on Mars. You can try to construct giant space mirrors for sunlight, pull and crash ice asteroids to accelerate water formation, or even control martian Volcanoes. The possibilities of the flora and fauna are something to look forward to, making the game inviting for multiple playthroughs.

It’s important to point out that the game opts to downplay mankind’s greed and aggression, with virtually Lead mankind to the New Frontier

It is, however, a race for resources as you try to establish the largest and most powerful martian colony in terms of land area and production. You also get to define your entire supply chain to ensure the survival and wealth of your inhabitants.

An exciting large-scale strategy game

Despite its lack of combat mechanics, Terraformers remain an incredibly exciting experience, especially for scientifically-inclined fans. It inspires a sense of wonder as it stretches what we currently know as possible and gives players an idea of how these techs can be wielded to turn Mars into our next home planet. Equally impressive is the thought given to developing the leaders, from stories to abilities. Recommended.

PROS

  • Leaders have riveting backstories
  • Tech ideas seem possible in real-life
